Customer Review: Excellent do it yourself guide
This is an excellent do it yourself guide to roofing
Customer Review: Great for roofing, weak for siding
This book has fairly complete coverage of roofing, but only has about 25 or so pages on siding. I was pretty disapointed in this book because I bought it in preparation for residing my house. .

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Customer Review: A comprehensive guide to ensure a top quality roof.
The Guide provides detailed information on how to plan for and install a top quality roof in a minimum amount of time. With no previous roofing experience, a homeowner armed with this book could easily tackle most any roofing project and feel confident that the end result will be a lasting, trouble free roof. If you are hiring out the job, The Guide shows you what to look for when evaluating bids and what to insist on in terms of workmanship. I used this book and completed a roof in 4 days, savings about $4000. .

Roof Construction Manual, English Edition (Roofing Felt Installation)

Friday, August 29th, 2008

The Roof Construction Manual is a comprehensive reference work on the construction of pitched roofs, containing over 1800 plans and 220 photographs. Thirteen fundamental roof types and the relevant materials including thatch, wood, slate, tile, concrete, fibrous cement, bitumen, glass, metal, membranes, and synthetic materials are documented in detail. Essential topics such as ventilation, vapour and wind seals, insulation and drainage, renovation and energy conservation are examined. As with all the Construction Manuals, some 38 built examples illustrate the theoretical details, paying particular attention to important features such as the ridge, hip, eaves, roof valley, verge, and penetration. A compact presentation of the load-bearing physics and structures as well as current norms and standards make this volume an indispensable standard work for all architects and engineers.
Customer Review: roof construction manual
book in good shape and delivery is quick.

amazon’s sevice is at least 4 stars
Customer Review: Please Note: Only pitched roof covered!
I love the Edition DETAIL’s series of Construction Manuals. These books have taken some of the examples from their wonderful magazines series but is much more comprehensive. It covers the history of the materials, construction methods, material properties, example of projects built recently (within the past 10 yrs) and drawings of the enlarged details precisely and clearly labled. The price is a bit steep but I believe the book is well worth the price because you’ll have a hard time finding books like these (concentrated on details) on the market (if you did please share the titles with us). One drawback on books like these is there’s a danger the construction methods and details demonstrated in the book could become outdated as the years pass on. Another thing I would like to point out particular to the Roof Construction Manual is the book only covers pitched roof (otherwise I would have given it five stars). .

Porter-Cable RN175A 7/8-Inch to 1-3/4-Inch Coil Roofing Nailer (National Roofing Association)

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Two selectable trigger modes top the list of what we like about this roof nailer. With just a turn of a knob, you can increase your production and cut your work time using the bump-fire method, covering a huge area of roof in no time at all. When precision takes precedence over speed, just turn the knob back to sequential fire. If, for some reason, you want only the single fire, Porter-Cable will send you the mechanism for free.

Other features on this nailer are what you’d expect from Porter-Cable. The shingle guide adjusts quickly and easily and locks down securely for absolute consistency; the depth-of-drive adjustment is quick and easy to use, and it has detents at every quarter-turn of the knob. Non-skid pads on the housing help keep the tool from sliding down a steep pitch, and the rubber grip is smooth and comfortable. Though we didn’t experience any misfires or jams, you’d need a slender rod to nudge the driver blade up and a pair of needle nose pliers to pull out a jammed nail.

It’s got power, speed and precision for the professional roofer or the do-it-yourselfer up on the roof.–Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Customer Review: instruction manuals not available on-line
Refurb Porter Cable roofing nailer model RN175A comes without a user guide.

Porter-Cable’s web site support page link for “search for your manual” redirects to a site called servicenet.

Servicenet is under construction with limited functionality.
Isn’t that sweet?

Servicenet’s reference to “new user registration link above” can not be implemented because there is no link to new user registration.

A phone calls to Porter Cable’s support line does offer the opportunity to leave a recorded message requesting a printed manual be mailed. But how long will it be before the Indonesian lady in the out-sourced fulfillment group deciphers my message, and the document arrives? 1 week? 1 month? Who knows?

The lack of a downloadable manual warrants a one star for this product.

Customer Review: Exceptional Roofing Nailer
I purchased this nail gun based on my previous experience with the quality of Porter-Cable pneumatic tools. Aside from this one I own 4 other Porter-Cable nail guns, I have been very satisfied with all of them.

This nailer is no disappointment. In the time I have owned it I have used it for installing asphalt shingles, tar paper, aluminum drip end, vinyl siding, and vinyl trim pieces. It has performed very well in all instances. It has ample power to drive 1.75″ nails flush while performing roofing applications.

The adjustable depth of drive also proves very useful while installing vinyl siding. Setting it to the minimum depth setting allows you to drive the nails into the nailing slots in siding while still leaving the 1/16″ gap necessary to allow the siding to expand and contract under changes in temperature.

While using this nailer I have never experienced a jammed nail, it has always performed flawlessly. The only negative I can see in this nail gun is that it does not have marks on the nose to indicate exactly where the nail will be placed. This makes precise placement of the nail slightly difficult. I don’t think this is enough of a negative point to reduce this nail gun from its “5 star” status because I very easily solved the problem by making marks of my own with a silver colored permanent marker. .

Customer Review: inkrite
This tool works well when used within the parameters for which it was probably designed. Primarily indoors or in moderate temperatures outdoors. The ink will dry very quickly on the line in hot and/or windy conditions as could be expected. Experimented by adding a small amount of water to the inkwell to re-hydrate the sponge and ink, worked surprisingly well (not the all-weather ink). Does leave a nice fine line. Don’t expect the tool to replace your chalk line, but it makes a great addition to your toolbox. Tajima chalklines and chalk seem to be the best on the market having used co-workers’ and then going back to my cheaper line. Think I’ll buy regular and ultra-thin and keep the old black and yellow chalk box for multiple snaps for framing.
Customer Review: Not Impressed
I purchased this thinking it would be a fine, precise line. It’s very hard to get a fine line. It’s either to weak or splatters. I didn’t want a chalk line that’s too fussy. I rather stick with chalk.
